Dark of the Moon Audiobook is the book that introduces the Virgil Flowers series, the second major series character to be created by the best-seller, John Sandford. Virgil is an investigator for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is run by Lucas Davenport, Sandford’s better-known protagonist.
Still, Sandford has another winner with the Flowers character and I look forward to Virgil’s next adventure. I am already progressing through Sandford’s other long Lucas Davenport series which I really enjoy too.
Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, “We’ll only give you the hard stuff.”
He’s been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.
In the small town of Bluestem, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There are a lot of reasons to hate him, Flowers discovers. In fact, he concludes, you’d probably have to dig around to find a person who doesn’t despise Judd.
And that isn’t even why Flowers came to Bluestem. Three weeks before, there’d been another murder, two, in fact, a doctor and his wife, the doctor found propped up in his backyard, both eyes shot out. Flowers knows two things: this wasn’t a coincidence, and it had to be personal.
But just how personal is something even he doesn’t realize, and may not find out until too late. Because the next victim may be himself.
About the Author

Dark of the Moon Audiobook mp3 is a fun read and an excellent beginning to what has turned out to be a very entertaining series. There’s lots of action and a very clever, convoluted plot.
Sandford keeps the reader guessing and the pages turning while Flowers displays the kind of cool and folksy charm that might force Davenport to share the spotlight more often. Flowers make an interesting kind of hero and the rural Minnesota ambiance is well done. I enjoyed this immensely.
It’s easy to understand how John Sandford parlayed this gem of a mystery novel into his second popular series. The characters are believable, the dialogue sparkles, and the suspense builds to a tragic climax.
Overall this is an enjoyable crime thriller with an interesting lead character and some good action scenes, and eventually the series clicked up to the level I’ve come to expect from Sandford.
